It has been 68 days since I first wrote about the BP oil leak. At the time, I thought it would be a quick fix and BP would be tested in their crisis management for a few days. As it turned out, this has redefined crisis management and corporate identity protection/destruction. Never before has a company had to be on guard for so long, never before has an organization had to redefine the landscape and the message more times than BP has over the last three months.

If someone tells you to forget everything you know about communication and get into social media, run the other way.
For a business to be successful in social media, strategy is the key. Doesn't that sound like the recipe for success in every other form of marketing? Yes, it's one in the same. Social media should not be treated like an invention, rather an evolution of the way we communicate.

This weekend, I attend Tribe Camp, a great day of learning and networking for Memphis marketers, programmers, educators and social media explorers.
Aside from all of the fantastic presentations, many of which are available through SlideShare, I picked up a few book recommendations from attendees that I thought I’d share. Some are older, and some are just-released, but all are worthwhile reads if you’re into marketing, social media and communicating.
What books would you add to the list?

Wouldn't our job be easy if that was all it took? Don't know what I'm referring to? Technology news has been rife with this "cloak and dagger" story that reads more like a Tom Clancy chapter than a real life birthday boy water cooler story. The New York Times take on the chain of events can be found here, but here's the one sentence summary: Apple employee carrying a prototype of the new iPhone leaves the device at a bar and Gizmodo (tech news outfit) buys it from the lucky...

What happens when you marry crowd sourcing, discounts and social media? Ask the more than 2 million subscribers to Groupon, and the thousands of businesses who have welcomed those subscribers through their doors – happiness all around.
Groupon is one of the fastest growing “deal-a-day” Web sites. Here’s how it works: people sign up for deals in their city. Each day, Groupon features a different deal (50 percent off at a nail salon, for example). If enough subscribers sign up for the deal, the...

How many places have you been in the past week? Think about it - coffee shop, daycare, movies, work, gym, etc. You're constantly on the move, and you're not alone.
Today's consumers are increasingly mobile. This in itself is not a new revelation, but now marketers are using location-based marketing to make sure their messages are not only heard, but customized, for their on-the-go audience.

Now here's something really special. I'm no soccer fan (excuse me, "futbol") but human emotions are human emotions no matter what country you're in. Guys are guys the world over, and they hate missing scheduled sporting events. What do guys who like sports also like? That's right, drinking beer. So in walks Heineken with a great idea that takes advantage of the target's emotional weak spot. The result? 1.5 million viewers saw user reaction on live TV, 5 million unique hits to the site, and...

Picture this: You own a restaurant, and people literally compete to see who can spend the most time in your establishment. They are recommending your best menu items to friends, and telling the world via Twitter and Facebook every time they walk through your door. And, you can track where they are coming from, where else they’ve been and what time of day they like to visit.
Dreaming? Nope. All of this and more is possible through Foursquare, just one of several geo-tagging applications...

As a brand and reputation specialist, I can’t let the Tiger Woods apology today go without comment. A few thoughts:
It was an actual apology with the words “I’m Sorry” used several times. The words “irresponsible, selfish, foolish, embarrassed, unfaithful and wrong” were also used. That is a refreshing change from the typical corporate and political uses of the phrase “I regret.”
It was a bit late in coming, but I don’t think that will matter in the long term.
His vocalization...

Southwest Airlines has, arguably, the best reputation of just about any airline. Their ads through the years have been on target – present ads about "bags fly free" included. They have among the highest customer service scores in the industry, month in and month out. This is not bad at all for an airline that is basically a cattle-call bus in the air type of airline (I mean that in the best possible way). They offer a low cost alternative and a “flying can be fun”...
