Package Design You'll Have to See, or Not See, to Believe!

Brian D's picture
When I set up my profile on brainwoo.com, one of the questions that we had to answer was, "What is the most interesting thing that I have learned lately?" Day to day we learn a lot of things; some we remember and some we don't. One thing that stuck with me in late 2009 was hearing that Frito Lay's Sun Chips brand was on the forefront of introducing a fully compostable bag. It seems that nowadays many companies try to proclaim some type of "green" message, but what companies really follow... Read more.

Oh, the Places You'll Go!

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss! Writer, illustrator, educator,….marketer? Dr. Seuss – a.k.a. Theodor Seuss Geisel, actually started his career as an advertising illustrator. Check out some of his work below. Look familiar? Geisel’s story is an interesting one. He was a lifetime proponent of reading, and the positive effects it could have on children. In fact, his most famous book, The Cat... Read more.

"Just Photoshop It"

David T's picture
You’ve heard it. You’ve probably even said it: “Can’t you just Photoshop it?” Maybe that’s the benchmark for the success of a product––when your product name becomes a widely used and accepted verb. February 18 marked the 20th anniversary of Adobe Photoshop. When Thomas and John Knoll developed their pixel-imaging program in the late eighties, I doubt they had any idea of the global impact of their efforts and that they would still be on the cutting-edge 20 years later. The Amazing Is Indeed Different

Michael's picture
I experienced something amazing in Los Angeles last weekend—the Rembrandt Exhibition at The Getty Museum. Seven of us were given a personal tour by the exhibition’s curator, Lee Hendrix.  Lee worked for over 10 years to curate the exhibit.  And the premise is extraordinary:  “Telling the difference between Rembrandt and his pupils.” A scholarly study was undertaken by Ms. Hendrix, and art scholars from around the globe, to determine which drawings were by the hand of Rembrandt... Tennessee's Civil War Celebrates 150 years.

The Situation:Our client, the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, asked us to create a logo that would help give an identity to the 150-year anniversary of  Tennessee's involvement in our nation's Civil War. The Solution:Many ideas ran through our head. One  major decision was whether to go with guns, drums, flags or hats. Shapes to consider were vertical, horizontal, circle or square. We were hesitant to go with an extreme... Read more.

Tourism Needs Sales Collateral for National Tour Association event.

The Situation:Tennessee Department of Tourist Development attends many different trade show events throughout the year. The National Tour Association (NTA) held an event in which our client needed a sales collateral piece that highlighted the newly announced "Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways" program. The Solution:Knowing that a lot of collateral can be handed out as well as received, we wanted to create a piece that carried the existing Tourism brand, but introduced the new "Trails and... What Do You Do When the Ideas Don't Come?

Brian D's picture
Employ the creative process loop. Chart created by Dubberly Design Office in collaboration with Jack Chung, Shelley Evenson, and Paul Pangaro. It's the visual equivalent of writer's block, and we often assume it is something we have to ride out until that lightning bolt miraculously returns. I believe the problem is not a lack of inspiration. Instead, it is that the initial spark of an idea is so delicate, it is often shot down by us creative types before it has a chance to grow. Our ideas are... Read more.

What Pixar Taught Me About the Creative Process, Part 1

PJ's picture
Here at brainwoo, we each select two specialties that correspond to our interests and skills. My two specialties have nothing to do with Lucha libre or knitting patterns, but I can guarantee you if I had a third specialty it would have something to do with Pixar Animation Studios. Figure 1. You see, I'm what I like to call a Pixar authority (and what everyone else likes to call a tremendous nerd).  One of the positive things about my Pixar wisdom (obsession) is that countless hours of... Are You Using Google Wave? Should You Be?

Katie's picture
Let’s talk about Google Wave.  It’s the newest Web-based tool from Google, and it’s been getting a lot of buzz since its debut in September. Although a limited number of invites went out a few months ago, a larger group of people is now getting an opportunity to check out Google Wave. So, just what is this buzzed-about tool? And more importantly, how can you use it for your business? What is it? Simply put, Google Wave is a real-time communication platform. It has elements of wiki, e-mail... Read more.

I know after I write this that I will officially be an old codger.    But I can’t help it. After being in the business for more than 25 years, I've earned it.  Read more.
