According to a recent article in Retail Traffic Magazine, luxury retailers are having to take a deeper look at the affluent audience and how their products and locations can cater to them. Even though the luxury market is in better shape today than it was a year ago, there is still a long road ahead to get back to where they were prior to the recession.

The Not So Easily Swayed Generation

[noun] - A youngster between 10 and 12 years of age, considered too old to be a child and too young to be a teenager*
[adj] - Very easy to market to, will usually follow any fashion trend set for them, will most likely go through a phase of "finding themselves" as they "grow up"**

This week on The Today Show, Matt Lauer interviewed David Vladeck with the Federal Trade Commission Bureau of Consumer Protection. They discussed the power and influence that advertising has on today's tweens. As the definition above mentions, the tween age group is heavily influenced by things they see. Therefore, the FTC has decided to take educating them on advertising and the sometimes hidden meanings behind them into their own hands.

According to a recent article on the World Gold Council's website, Affluents are putting their money in gold, not their banks.

As the recession started in 2008, luxury jewelers noticed a decrease in sales. However, a new trend emerged during the second half of 2009. According to Same Hines, Christie's Vice-President and Head of Watches in New York, "[we saw] a tendency for investors to move their funds from the bank to luxury watches because they want both better returns and to be able to enjoy a high-end timepiece." Hines went on to comment that his clients were saying that they weren't earning interest in the bank, so they preferred to invest their money into something that they could enjoy, while resting assured that it would hold its value....read the rest of this post»

Meet Sue. Sue is a marketer for a luxury brand, and is in charge of reaching out to the affluent audience with specific brand and product messages for her company. She has built a Facebook fan page for her brand, and she makes sure that the other marketing pieces have links for others to become a fan of her brand. After a few months of promoting the luxury brand's Facebook page, they check to see how many fans they have. Sue realizes that the fan numbers are low, but can't figure out what went wrong. AAF Webinar Review: "Turning Silver into Gold"

The other day, several brainwooers participated in a webinar that discussed insights into the growing Baby Boomer generation and the best ways to reach them. The webinar was based on the book Turning Silver into Gold: How to Profit in the New Boomer Marketplace by Dr. Mary S. Furlong.

There were several interesting facts that marketers seem to overlook when trying to reach this market. With a little more understanding of this audience, marketers should be able to creatively reach them where they already are.
